More than 80 years ago, Blue Bunny® set out to create the most fun, playful, delicious ice cream. The rest, as they say, is history.
In Le Mars, Iowa, Fred H. Wells, Jr. pays $250 to a local dairy farmer for a horse, delivery wagon, a few cans and jars, and the goodwill of the business. This investment covered the milk distribution route and guaranteed Wells a source of milk from a herd of just 15 cows. (A drop in the bucket compared to now!)
Blue Bunny is born when Fred and his brother Harry hold a “Name that Ice Cream” contest. A man from nearby Sioux City, Iowa, submitted “Blue Bunny” and his rendition of the original bunny (known as Blu®) and won a whopping $25!

Le Mars, Iowa, a town of 10,000, and home to Wells Enterprises, is named Ice Cream Capital of the World®.
We don’t just keep the milk fresh around here. Blue Bunny updates their logo again, which is used for the next 20 years.
Blue Bunny debuts the flavor “Bunny Tracks.” Vanilla ice cream with chocolate peanut butter bunnies, chocolate covered peanuts, and swirls of caramel and fudge make for an iconic favorite!
To commemorate Wells’ 100th anniversary, Blue Bunny partners with Make-A-Wish® to grant 100 wishes to children across the United States.
